The Opportunity:

The California Bay Area, known for its natural beauty, array of cultures, and thriving technology industry, is also home to extreme hardship with one in four residents living in poverty. Poverty is an enormously complex challenge with root causes as diverse as its victims. As one of the leading nonprofits in the region, the United Way Bay Area (UWBA) is a catalyst for change, activating individuals and organizations to break the cycle of poverty in the Bay Area by building financial capability among residents and fighting to remove barriers to success. With early roots among the nation’s first community chests, incorporated in 1922, United Way Bay Area has a rich history of bringing together individuals, nonprofits, businesses, and government entities to fight for a strong, vibrant, and healthy community. By enabling neighbors to invest in one another, the organization addresses the specific needs of the community and helps more than 250,000 Bay Area residents each year through four pillars of impact:

In addition to poverty-fighting initiatives, the United Way is the premier convener of community engagement by empowering companies and individuals to donate, advocate, and volunteer to strengthen community and change lives. Following a merger in 2016, UWBA brings public, private and nonprofit partners across eight counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Solano) to tackle these complex problems. Together, UWBA and its partners have hundreds of program sites serving the community every day.

The new Chief Development Officer will join during an exciting period for UWBA and for the United Way network, as United Way Worldwide leads a digital transformation with several systems emerging to support partners in every community with their workplace giving, employee volunteerism and other social purpose activities. For instance, through a unique partnership with Salesforce, each United Way is able to offer a CSR platform called Salesforce Philanthropy Cloud that changes how corporate employees give and volunteer. New platforms such as this will help company partners make it simpler and easier to help their employees change the world.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reporting to and partnering closely with the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) will work with the Board, leadership team, development team, donors and other key constituents to lead, drive and catalyze innovations that both maintain and transform the organization’s revenue model in order to achieve the bold mission of cutting poverty in the Bay Area in half.
  • The CDO will be responsible for setting the large-scale strategy for development efforts and executing on that plan. The individual will oversee donor engagement initiatives to strengthen constituent relationships and create awareness of the role that UWBA plays in the community and aggressively build financial support for UWBA. This includes driving strategic corporate partnerships, employee engagement and cause marketing solutions, as well as innovations to further participation from high net worth individuals and institutional donors. The CDO will also actively manage a donor portfolio by personally participating in stewardship, cultivation, and solicitation.
  • In the short term, the CDO will guide the Board, staff, and volunteers in developing and executing strategies for raising $40,000,000+ annually, including $18,000,000+ of funding for UWBA programs and operations. Meanwhile, the CDO will develop a strategic plan that establishes goals and strategies for doubling revenue targets in three to five years.
    The Chief Development Officer will lead a best-in-class development program and will oversee and manage a team currently of 10 development professionals, including three Senior Directors. As a member of the leadership team, the CDO will work closely and collaboratively modeling effective, on-going cross departmental partnerships that address the intersections of fundraising, communication, board governance, program, and infrastructure.
  • Finally, the Chief Development Officer will enhance UWBA’s overall approach to development – one that creates a true culture of philanthropy and collaboration throughout the organization, improves and develops sustained success in contributed revenue, and ultimately fulfills UWBA’s mission and achieves its vision. The CDO will accelerate and deepen the organization’s commitment to evolving a true CRM culture.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

  • A firm commitment to the goals and objectives of UWBA, and to the belief that UWBA can make a powerful and positive impact on the community.
  • A successful track record as a leader in the field of development with a wide range of fundraising channels including individuals, corporations, foundations, and government. (Other revenue generating experience may also be considered).
    Articulate in defining corporate partnership strategy and setting a vision for UWBA’s capabilities to drive corporate social responsibilities across multiple business segments.
  • Strong technological acumen with experience leading a data-driven approach to development/revenue generation and a proven ability to use metrics to inform and drive decisions and achieve strategic objectives.
  • A comprehensive understanding of Salesforce and other donor management or CRM systems and tools.
    Strategic and results-oriented leader with the ability to set a vision for the organization’s next fundraising chapter and oversee the execution of a development plan with success measured against key performance indicators.
    Proven ability to lead company-wide alignment on partner priorities and activities.
  • Exceptional people skills with the flexibility and foresight to institute contemporary management practices.
    Grow the team that will manage partner programs and increase the partnership pipeline.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, equity, and inclusion.
  • Innovative, energetic, and able to function well in a fast-paced, team environment, which includes cross-department coordination driving a culture of collaboration, accountability, and effectiveness.
  • Skilled at building and sustaining excellent relationships at multiple levels with varied constituencies, including UWBA’s Board of Directors, donors, leadership team, corporate and community leaders, other UWBA departments, and local United Ways across the country.
  • An excellent listener and communicator who can be inspirational and motivational, both one-on-one and as a public speaker.
  • An appreciation for serving the Bay Area community.

EDUCATION
An undergraduate degree is required, and an advanced degree is preferred.
